Jewelry In Court

The year’s U.S. Open has been as much a fashion showdown as a tennis showdown. Taking to the court, the female tennis stars have been demonstrating more than just their spins and backhands - they’ve been fighting for the grand-slam title in tennis fashion styles.

'Put on a nice outfit and some makeup and you're the bomb,' explained Maria Sharapova who upped her ranking by co-designing with Nike a flashy red shift dress studded with 600 crystals. Justine Henin and Svetlana Kuznetsova also went for some red power while Venus Williams added a touch of femininity with a pleated hemline.

It was though the jewelry that had most heads turning. Serena Williams certainly believed that during her matches, diamonds were her best friend. She wore diamond earrings and necklaces by Euphoria New York throughout her court appearances.

As for Sharapova, she didn't just wear the dress - she had an ensemble. She made her way from the locker room in a cropped black jacket with sheer sleeves, wore pearl earrings from Tiffany & Co. and carried a black jeweled handbag and a patent leather bag for her rackets.

Svetlana Kuznetsova glammed it up on court with an oversized diamond S necklace that Superwoman would be proud of. Another jewelry clad playing tennis pro was Martina Hingis who wore a thick chain and silver earrings, adding a hint of sparkle to an otherwise all black-and-white outfit.

The prize though for the most ‘unusual’ outfit once again goes to Bethanie Mattek. She was obviously trying to go for gold in an over-the-top metallic gold outfit with mesh cutouts.Jewelry.com, 09/07/2007
